A speed limiter/ speed governor is an electronic device installed on a motor vehicle managed to limit the vehicle’s maximum speed to a pre-set value. In Kenya, this value is prescribed at 80Kph for commercial and passenger service vehicles. Radar speed limiters incorporate speed limiting with data transmission, data storage and data recording to offer enhanced safety and value to our customers.
Passenger service vehicles (PSVs) Tourist service vehicles (TSVs) and commercial vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes are required to fit speed limiters in Kenya.
Once fitted on a vehicle and certified, a speed limiter remains valid for one year. An annual inspection and re-certification is required as per NTSA regulations.
Any attempt to tamper with the new generation speed limiter (KS2295:2018 standard) will trigger a workshop/ limp mode setting which limits the vehicle’s speed at 40Kph. A visit to a fitting centre for maintenance of the limiter will then be required.
Digital speed limiters DO NOT interfere with normal operation of a vehicle’s engine. The limiter’s primary function is to prevent the vehicle from exceeding the prescribed speed recording and while transmitting location and speed data for regulatory purposes.
